Artis

Artis was too tired to eat. She had followed Max along the riverbank to the Metal Bridge and hadn’t even had the energy to be afraid as they crossed. If she’d fallen into the roiling waters below, she doubted she’d have had the strength to care.

After choosing a sheltered place among some trees, Max told her to sit while he went in search of food. The moment he left, she rolled onto her side and fell asleep.

“Artis?”

She heard her name but hadn’t the will to move.

“Artis?”

She felt him shake her, but her eyes wouldn’t open.

“Sweetheart, you have to eat.”

A dream, definitely. Max wouldn’t call her sweetheart, except in a dream. Artis slid back to sleep.

She woke, curled in a ball. The early morning was cold on her cheeks, but the body pressed into her back warmed her and made her feel, in a childlike way, loved. She let her eyes close again and drifted off.
